French or American oak: which used wine barrel should you pick?

For decor, it mostly comes down to looks. Check whether you get to choose the wood or one is assigned, and ask for photos of the actual barrel.

• Capacity: the size isn't stated, so ask for gallons or dimensions.
• Wine staining: the inside heads and staves often carry wine color, so check the photos if that matters to you.
• Hoops: tighten or tack loose rings before you cut or move the barrel.
• Outdoor use: a clear exterior sealer helps the oak weather evenly.
