30L Vintage Wood Wine Barrel Dispenser for Beer Brandy Tequila Whiskey Rum Port

About this barrel

Homebrewers who want to make a barrel-aged stout or sour can start with a 30 liter oak barrel like this one. It's a vintage-style wood dispenser, listed new at $112.40 by an independent eBay seller. At about 7.9 gallons, it suits brewers who make bigger batches or combine a couple of brew days.

Can I age beer in a 30 liter oak barrel?

Beer is one of the uses named in the listing. Many brewers first season a new barrel with a spirit to soften the raw oak. Then they move the beer in for a few weeks and taste it regularly.

• Soak the barrel with water first to tighten the staves.
• Sanitize carefully, because wood can hold wild yeast.
• Check the listing for the char level and tap fittings.
• Fill it as full as you can, since a part-filled barrel oxidizes faster.
