French Oak Wood Barrel 5 Gallon Used Wine You Clean Up Your Own Risk

About this barrel

This used French oak barrel, 5 gallon (18.9 liters), comes from wine use, and the seller's title is blunt: you clean it up at your own risk. That makes it a project piece rather than a fill-and-go cask. It's priced at $95.00.

Is a used 5 gallon French oak wine barrel worth restoring?

It can be, if you want a compact ex-wine cask with French oak character for sour beer, vinegar or another batch of wine, and you're comfortable doing the cleaning yourself.

• Expect work: plan on rinsing it, inspecting the inside and possibly treating any off smells before use.
• Swell test: soak it with water and let the staves tighten before you trust it with liquid.
• Decor option: if restoring it isn't worth the effort, a small wine cask still makes a good side table or bar accent.
• Read carefully: the listing photos and notes are your only guide to its condition.
