About this barrel
This new 5 liter French oak barrel (about 1.3 gallons) has a medium #3 char, and the seller lists it for tequila, rum, whiskey and moonshine. At $94.00, it's a compact way to get French oak character at home.
What does a medium #3 char on a 5 liter French oak barrel do?
A #3 char is in the middle of the common char scale. It adds color and toasty sweetness. French oak usually gives a subtler, spicier flavor than American oak.
- Speed: a 5L barrel ages spirits quickly, so start tasting within a week or two.
- Moonshine: unaged corn spirit picks up color and softens fast.
- Tequila: start with a blanco for a homemade reposado-style tequila.
- Prep: swell the barrel with water before filling. Check the listing to see whether a stand or spigot is included.
