About this barrel
A 5 liter French oak barrel hits a sweet spot: it's bigger than a mini but still quick enough to taste results in weeks. This new 1.3-gallon cask is listed at $95.00. Its title says it has an Alligator #4 char, the deepest standard char level.
What does Alligator #4 char do in a 5 liter French oak barrel?
A deep char leaves a cracked, scaly surface that can bring bold color, caramel and smoky notes. With French oak, it suits tequila, rum, whiskey and moonshine, all of which are named in the listing.
- Turn moonshine or blanco tequila into a homemade aged spirit.
- At 5 liters, check the flavor about once a week.
- Swell it with water before filling so the staves seal.
- Check the listing to see if a stand, spigot or bung is included.
