5 Gallon Oak Barrel, Wooden Whiskey Barrel & Wine Barrel, 20 Liter | Charred Ame

About this barrel

A 5 gallon oak barrel is about as big as most home aging setups get. This new 20 liter cask in charred American oak is listed as both a whiskey barrel and a wine barrel. Decide which one before your first fill, because the wood keeps whatever it holds first.

Should I use a charred 5 gallon barrel for whiskey or wine?

Charred American oak suits whiskey and bourbon best. Wine makers usually prefer lighter toast. If you start with wine, you can later switch the barrel to spirits, but switching from spirits back to wine rarely works well.

• Capacity: 20 liters, so plan your batch size and where you'll store it.
• Swelling: soak it with water for several days. Larger barrels can take longer to seal.
• Pace: it ages more slowly than mini barrels, which makes over-oaking less likely.
• Check: the char level and any included hardware aren't stated in the listing.
