5L/1.32Gal Aging Barrel Wooden Whiskey Barrel Bourbon Wine Barrel Home

About this barrel

Finishing bourbon at home works best with a plan. A 5L bourbon barrel like this new oak cask holds 1.32 gallons and costs $38.88, so you can experiment without using up a whole shelf of bottles. Wine and other whiskeys are also listed as uses.

How often should you taste bourbon in a 5L barrel?

Weekly is a sensible place to start. Pull a small sample with a barrel thief, or with the spigot if the listing shows one. Note the color and flavor, and bottle it when it tastes the way you want, not on a fixed date.

• Start with a reasonably priced bourbon you already like.
• Keep a log of the fill date, proof and tasting notes.
• Expect to lose some to evaporation over time.
• Swell the barrel with water before the first fill, and check the listing for the char level.
