5L/1.32Gal Aging Barrel Wooden Whiskey Barrel Bourbon Wine Barrel Home

About this barrel

Small-batch winemakers and fruit-wine hobbyists can give a few liters a proper rest in oak with this 5L wine barrel, a new 1.32-gallon oak cask priced at $38.88. The title also lists whiskey and bourbon, so you're not limited to one drink.

What does a small oak wine barrel do to homemade wine?

It adds oak character, smooths out harsh edges and lets a little oxygen in over time. A 5-liter barrel has more wood per liter than a winery cask, so it oaks wine quickly. Taste weekly at first.

• Swell the barrel with water before filling, and keep it full to limit oxidation.
• Red wines usually stand up to oak better than delicate whites.
• Check the listing for the toast or char level, which shapes the flavor.
• Rack the wine off when it tastes right instead of leaving it in the barrel indefinitely.
