5L/1.32Gal Aging Barrel Wooden Whiskey Barrel Bourbon Wine Barrel Home

About this barrel

First time aging at home? A new 5 liter bourbon barrel like this one is a forgiving place to start. It holds 1.32 gallons in oak, small enough to show results in weeks yet large enough that a few tastings won't drain your batch. The seller lists it for whiskey, bourbon and wine.

What spirit should go in a 5 liter oak barrel first?

Many people start with an inexpensive bourbon or rye. A fresh barrel gives up the most flavor on its first fill, so a modest spirit can come out tasting richer.

• Soak it with water until it stops leaking, which can take a day or more.
• Label the fill date and taste every week.
• Later fills age more slowly, so allow more time.
