Balazs New Hungarian Oak Barrel - 5L (1.32 gal)

About this barrel

The Balazs new Hungarian oak barrel, 5L (1.32 gal), is for people who want something different from the usual American white oak. It's listed new at $200.00 by an independent eBay seller.

What does Hungarian oak bring to a 5 liter barrel?

Hungarian oak is generally seen as gentler and spicier than American oak, so it's popular for wine and for spirits where you want the oak in the background. At 5L, the barrel is small enough to work fairly quickly but big enough for a useful batch.

• Capacity: 5 liters, or about 1.32 gallons, per the title.
• First step: fill it with water and let it swell until the leaks stop.
• Ask about: toast level and whether a stand or spigot is included. Neither is stated.
• Ideas: red wine, brandy, rum, or a long-aged vinegar.
