Red Head Barrels 5L Premium Charred Oak Aging Barrel Whiskey Wine Rum Scotch

About this barrel

Red Head Barrels lists this 5L charred oak aging barrel for anyone ready to finish whiskey, rum, scotch or even wine in wood at home. An independent eBay seller offers it new for $85.90.

What does charring do inside an oak barrel?

Charring caramelizes the sugars in the wood and leaves a layer that filters the spirit. That pulls vanilla, toffee and toasty notes into the liquid and softens harsh edges. The title doesn't give the char level, so check the full description.

• Soak the barrel with water before filling so the staves swell tight.
• A 5 liter cask ages more slowly than the minis, so taste every week or two.
• Age rum in it after a whiskey batch to pick up layered flavor.
• Check the photos for a stand, spigot and bung before you buy.
