Whiskey Wine Barrel, Vintage Reclaimed Used Wood Barrel, Primitive Rum Keg, N

About this barrel

Every used whiskey barrel tells a slightly different story, and this one, a vintage reclaimed oak keg labeled N in its eBay title, sells for $495 from an independent seller. It belongs to a series of similar primitive barrels, so the photos for this specific listing are what count. Before buying any old barrel, it pays to know how to judge it from pictures alone.

What should you check on a used whiskey barrel before buying?

Focus on structure first. Old barrels can look gorgeous and still have loose hoops or cracked staves.

• Staves: look for splits or wide gaps along the seams.
• Hoops: rust is common, but they should sit snug.
• Heads: both ends should be intact if you want it to stand or hold liquid.
• Odor: ask the seller about smells, mold or past contents.

To test an old barrel for liquid use, fill it with water and let the wood swell for a few days before judging leaks.
