5L/1.32Gal Wine Barrel Wooden Whiskey Barrel Bourbon Wine Barrel Home

About this barrel

Home winemakers and cocktail fans often start with a 5L oak wine barrel, and this one is listed new at $31.99 by an independent eBay seller. At 1.32 gallons it's a manageable size for small batches, and the title says it can also hold whiskey or bourbon.

Will a 5L oak wine barrel change the taste of wine quickly?

Generally, yes. In a smaller barrel more of the liquid touches wood, so oak character builds faster than in a standard cask. Short stays are usually enough.

• Hydrate the barrel with water until it holds without seeping.
• Fill it close to the top to limit air contact.
• Check the listing for toast or char details, which the title doesn't give.
• Rinse and refill soon after emptying so the wood stays swollen.
