Mini whiskey oak wood barrel

About this barrel

Small-batch aging starts with a mini whiskey oak barrel, and this used wooden one is offered for $89.95. The listing title is short, so most of what you need to know is in the seller's photos and description.

What should you ask before buying a used mini whiskey oak barrel?

Find out its exact capacity, what it held before and whether it has been stored dry. A barrel that has dried out may need a longer soak in water before it seals again.

• Mini barrels age quickly, so taste often to avoid too much oak.
• Check whether a stand, bung or spigot is included, since the title doesn't name any.
• Look inside for char if the photos show it, or ask the seller.
• Rinse it thoroughly before refilling it with your own spirit.
