About this barrel
This French oak cask on stand was hand-crafted in France by Geraud Lafitte, so you get European barrel-making and a stand to display it on, listed at $180.00. Winemakers value French oak for its tighter grain and subtler spice compared with American oak.
Is a French oak cask on stand right for aging wine?
It can be, as long as it holds liquid. The listing doesn't give capacity or condition, so ask about those first.
- Condition: not stated. Ask whether it's new or used and whether it has ever been filled.
- Volume: unknown, so ask for liters or dimensions.
- Stand: included, according to the title. Check the photos to see how the cask sits and whether it has a spigot.
- Prep: soak the cask with water so it swells before you fill it with wine, port or spirits.
A handsome choice for a cellar, kitchen counter or tasting room.
